Apple computers are known for their intuitive user interface, beautiful displays, and high-quality components. There are other differences as well: Mac OS is centered around individual ownership of devices as opposed to Windows which provides more flexibility for company controls of company-owned computers. This presents some challenges when securing Apple computers because it can allow unfortunate actions based on the ownership and control of Apple computers. For example, if a staff member’s Apple ID becomes compromised, attackers can potentially access data or accounts and can even wipe a Mac computer clean. Additionally, a prior staff member may be able to use their personal Apple ID to make their former MacBook unusable to the company.
Apple does have some controls available to help for companies to mitigate these risks. However, this requires a special procedure for managing Mac computers, and that procedure requires starting at the beginning: when the computer is purchase and when the staff member first logs into the computer with an Apple ID. Mac computers must be associated with your company when they are purchased. Additionally, Apple IDs should be tied to company emails and controlled by Apple Business Manager. Before purchasing your company’s next Apple computer, iPad or iPhone; talk with our Apple team to ensure all available controls are in-place to protect your investment.

I attended “Toast to Tech with AWTC!” in Chicago on February 19th because, honestly, who wouldn’t want to mix wine tasting with great conversation about technology?
Association Women Technology Champions (AWTC) is a dynamic networking and educational group dedicated to advancing women in association technology. This unique event paired each wine in the tasting flight with insightful discussions on innovation, automation, and AI in the association space. Attendees asked thought-provoking questions, exchanged innovative strategies, and connected over shared experiences all while enjoying a fantastic selection of wines and learning fascinating tidbits from a sommelier.
A standout moment of the evening? The final wine - an excellent Brunello from Donatella Cinelli Colombini - the first all-female staffed winery. A fitting toast to a group that’s all about empowering women in tech!
By the end of the evening, I didn’t hesitate to join this friendly, knowledgeable, and supportive community of women and men.
AWTC welcomes anyone working in or serving associations whether as staff, suppliers, consultants, or partners. Even if you don’t formally work in IT, you’ll find valuable insights and a safe space to ask questions, learn, and grow. If you’re passionate about advancing technology in associations, this is the group for you!

Surveys are a powerful usability tool for gathering insights, opinions, and data from a target audience. However, the effectiveness of a survey largely depends on its design. A well-crafted survey should be easy to understand and free from bias to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the collected data. Here are some key principles to consider when designing surveys:
1. Define Clear Objectives - Before creating a survey, clearly define what you aim to achieve. Understanding your goals will help you formulate relevant questions and ensure that the survey stays focused.
2. Use Simple and Clear Language
- Avoid Jargon: Use everyday language that is easily understood by all respondents.
- Be Specific: Ensure that questions are precise and unambiguous to avoid confusion.
3. Keep It Short and Focused
- Limit the Number of Questions: Only include questions that are essential to your objectives.
- Group Related Questions: Organize questions into logical sections to make the survey easier to navigate.
4. Avoid Leading Questions
- Neutral Wording: Frame questions in a way that does not suggest a particular answer. For example, instead of asking, “How much do you love our product?” ask, “How would you rate your experience with our product?”
- Balanced Options: Provide a balanced set of response options to avoid bias. For example, use a scale that includes both positive and negative options equally.
5. Use Closed-Ended Questions Wisely
- Multiple Choice: These questions are easy to analyze but ensure that all possible answers are covered.
- Rating Scales: Use consistent scales (e.g., 1 to 5) throughout the survey to maintain clarity.
6. Include Open-Ended Questions
- Gather Detailed Feedback: Open-ended questions allow respondents to provide more detailed and nuanced feedback.
- Limit Their Use: Use them sparingly to avoid overwhelming respondents and to keep the survey concise.
7. Pilot Test Your Survey
- Test with a Small Group: Conduct a pilot test with a small, representative sample of your target audience to identify any issues with question clarity or survey flow.
- Revise Accordingly: Use the feedback from the pilot test to make necessary adjustments before launching the survey.
8. Ensure Anonymity and Confidentiality
- Build Trust: Assure respondents that their answers will remain anonymous and confidential to encourage honest and accurate responses.
- Data Protection: Follow data protection regulations to safeguard respondents’ information.
9. Provide Clear Instructions
- Guidance: Offer clear instructions on how to complete the survey, including how to navigate between sections and submit responses.
- Contact Information: Provide contact details for respondents to reach out if they have any questions or need assistance.
10. Analyze and Interpret Data Objectively
- Avoid Confirmation Bias: Analyze the data objectively without letting personal biases influence the interpretation.
- Report Findings Accurately: Present the findings in a clear and unbiased manner, highlighting both positive and negative insights.
By following these principles, you can create surveys that are easy to understand, free from bias, and effective in gathering valuable data. Remember, the goal is to obtain accurate and reliable information that can inform decision-making and drive improvements. |
