Association Forum Honors Gala, a Recap by Mark Granquist |
|
March 3, 2020, ASAE Great Ideas in Salt Lake City, was the last time we had attended an in-person industry event. I distinctly remember many association execs scrambling to figure out if they would be able to hold their own conferences as the news of the pandemic was released. We all know what happened next. This month, nearly a year and a half later, we joined a few hundred members of the Chicago association community at Association Forum's Annual Honors Gala to recognize some of the great accomplishments of their peers. We were excited to see several clients receive recognition: Jay Carino, MBA, CAE of ANFP received the John C. Thiel Distinguished Service Award and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was the recipient of the Welcoming Environment® Organizational Award. This was the first time we attended the event but it definitely will not be the last. It was a good excuse to get dressed up (it had been awhile) and great to see (in person) so many familiar faces. We want to congratulate all the recipients and wish Michelle Mason the best at ASAE. |

Ed graduated from DePaul with a degree in Computer Science after starting as a Music Education major at University of Cincinnati. He had a change of heart about his career aspirations but still loves music and decided he wanted to finish his degree closer to home. He then earned his masters degree in human computer interaction and became a network engineer for CI Host where he was promoted to data center manager within a few months. He loved the development side during school so he started a new career as a developer for Bostrom and was later promoted to IT Manager while maintaining his work in development. A coworker at Bostrom was good friends with Mark Granquist so Ed became aware that AT was looking for a developer. Since he wanted to strictly do development he jumped at the opportunity to work at AT. What he enjoys most about his work is solving problems (the more complex the better) and coming up with ways to make interfaces better and easier to use.
Outside of work, Ed stays very busy with his family. He and Wendy have been married for 12 years and live in Lincolnwood with their daughter Lanna (8), son Nakarin (4) and a mini schnauzer named Johann. Lanna is super involved in hockey and practices 6 days a week, playing on both a boys and a girls team. The family traveled to Boston this month for a tournament where Lanna’s team placed second. Nakarin loves monster trucks, transformers, and legos, and hasn't decided if he will follow in his big sisters footsteps or try out a new sport.
And now a few questions to get to know a little more about Ed:
Three fun facts about Ed:
- Both Ed and his wife are musicians, Ed has played the violin played since he was 4 and Wendy plays piano
- Ed is a USA Hockey Certified Coach and coaches for the Chicago Blackhawks Blind and Special Hockey teams. He became involved in the organization when Lanna made a donation to the team for her 5th birthday. His coaching mainly focuses on teaching kids to skate.
- Ed was a member of the disaster action team with the American Red Cross helping families that had lost their homes.
If he wasn't working at AT he would be: a high school orchestra teacher because he loves working with kids and has always loved music.
Favorite Project at AT: His favorite project was the AATS online project because it gave him an opportunity to do a full application development project from start to finish. He used ASP.NET MVC and found it to be a very enjoyable platform to work on. During the project, he created an online resource for surgeons, building a catalog with images and videos. This was a bigger project that he worked on alone and really enjoyed it.
Favorite vacation: His family doesn't take a lot of vacations since they travel to Thailand most years but he really enjoyed turning the hockey trip to Boston into a family vacation.
Favorite Music to Listen to: Classical music has always been his favorite but he loves all types of music.
Ed is happiest when: he is playing music. He plays the violin as well as several Thai and Chinese instruments.
